Referees should be professionally or academically related to the applicant. References must be recent (within the last five years) and obtained from individuals who are able to highlight the applicant's strengths and weaknesses as employee or student, as well as the applicant's readiness for graduate-level study in education. Referees can be current/former instructors of academic programs in which the applicant has completed formal studies; or current/former supervisors who have evaluated the applicant's performance. References will not be accepted from friends, clients, spiritual advisors, or personal health care professional as such references pose a potential conflict of interest.
